Today was Labor Day and it was stunning. Classic Oregon coast morning started out cool and misty. Took the scenic Lewis and Clark road to Seaside where the first challenge came up with a broken gear cable. Sorted at an open bike shop in Seaside. Stopped off to see a friend of Susie’s in Cannon Beach before climbing over to Manzanita including taking on the Arch Cape tunnel and having fish tacos & fish and chips at a great place in Nehalem. Long flat with the wind behind us took us on to Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi and Tillamook where we hung a right out to Cape Meares. A brutal headwind ensued followed by a closed road adventure up through the forest including gravel sections and a couple of encounters in the darkness with a couple of forest spirits that helped us along the way. Came out in Oceanside where I promptly got a flat and changed the tube out to ride the last piece up to the house. Stunning Airbnb with a deck and sunset to boot. Ended up at 84 miles and 5,450 feet of climbing – quite a bit more than we were expecting – but worth every bit.
